Healthcare in Mauritius

For many expatriates the quality and accessibility of healthcare and medical facilities are of high concern. Medical and emergency services are available across the island. Mauritius offers a public healthcare system and private healthcare institutions with competent medical facilities and treatments.

Public Health System

Public health services are available through several hospitals and clinics around the island. Public institutions provide healthcare free of charge and are available to all those residing on Mauritian Territory. Medical treatment can be done in public hospitals such as Dr A. Gaffoor Jeetoo in Port Louis, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital in Pamplemousses, Jawaharall Nehru Hospital in the Grand Port district and Victoria Hospital in Condos. Several specialised public hospitals are available and community health centres in each district of the island.

Private Health System

Mauritius has numerous private hospitals with state of the art equipment, providing world-class healthcare services to patients. Treatments and care at the private hospitals are not free, and health insurance is advisable. You can find private hospitals such as Wellkin Hospital in Moka, Nouvelle Clinique Ferrière in Curepipe, City Clinic in Port Louis, Fortis Clinique Darné in Floreal and in Grand Bay La Croisette shopping center.

More specialised private hospitals have opened in recent years such as Dr Awargal’s Eye Hospital, the ENT Hospital and the Dentcare dental clinic. You will find many expatriate practising doctors in Mauritius, from South African dentists and general practitioners, to doctors from London, Canada and France.

Medical Tourism

Over the last years Mauritius has witnessed a sustained growth in medical tourism. This allowed the island to position itself as a hub for medical tourism that can provide comprehensive high-end treatments to patients. Key treatments offered include cosmetic and plastic surgery, dentistry, hair grafting which can be done at Centre de Chirurgie Esthétique de l’Océan Indien. Other treatments include cardiology, fertility treatment, ophthalmology and orthopaedics.
